There’s always something going on and there are MANY ways to help. Our events and fundraisers are listed below. An “($)” indicates the event is a fundraiser. If you’d like to volunteer or want more information about a particular event, please email email@example.com and we will match you with one of our fundraising chairs.
The Fall Fest kicks off PS 234’s school year. Students and parents come together to celebrate the fall season with pumpkins & warm cider and autumn inspired crafts and games. About 75 volunteers are needed to set up, oversee craft and activity tables, sell food and clean up.
Book Fair ($)
Two book fairs are held each year at the school – one in the fall and the other in the spring. During the school day, teachers bring their class to shop at the fair. The fairs open early and stay open late so that parents can browse with their children. Volunteers are needed to help students select books and to restock shelves. The PTA receives 25% of book sales.
Bake Sales ($)
On Halloween and Valentine’s Day, parents & kids bake cupcakes, cookies and small sweets for an in-school bake sale. All items are baked at home and brought in the morning of the sale. You can help by donating baked goods (we ask that they be nut-free) and by helping sell goods throughout the day.
The beautiful gardens in front of PS 234 are the result of the ongoing love and care of the Garden Committee. If you would like to assist in the maintenance of the garden, please contact the Garden Committee. Volunteers do not need a green thumb! Your help is needed with weeding, applying mulch and new plantings.
PS 234 has a wonderful, well-stocked library that runs under the direction of Eileen Makoff, our head librarian. Parent volunteers are needed to shelve books, check books in and out, and to assist the children in their search for the perfect book to borrow.
Typically held in October, volunteers are needed to help ready the students for class photos. This includes combing hair, fixing pigtails, and straightening shirts.
PS 234 is proud to participate in PROJECT CICERO – a non-profit partnership, whose primary goal is to provide books for under-resourced New York City public schools through an annual citywide book drive. For one week, PS 234 collects used books from our community and forwards them to the Project Cicero team. Parents are needed to help sort books and pack them up for departure from the school.
As a courtesy to us all, PS 234 holds periodic lice checks during the school year. A professional lice removal company comes to our school and performs a quick check on each student. Should lice be detected, parents are contacted and given direction for lice removal. Parents are needed to help organize the students on the day of a lice check.
Friends & Fashion ($)
PS 234’s fun, fashionable fundraiser! Donate new and very gently used items. Things you’d pass along to your favorite girlfriend (handbags, costume jewelry, clothes, shoes, etc.) and then come and shop, shop, shop! Proceeds benefit PS 234 and unsold items are donated to Housing Works.
PS 234 Merchandise ($)
At various events during the school year, PS 234 merchandise is available for sale to our community. Merchandise includes t-shirts, hats, blankets and tote bags. Parents are needed to help sell the merchandise at the events.
Winter Fair and Game Night
These two events are also community-building events. Typically held in January, the Winter Fair is geared for the K-3 students and Game Night is for grades 4 & 5. Both events have games in the gym and activities within the school focusing around the winter season. Volunteers are needed to man one of the many arts & crafts tables, selling food and orchestrating the festivities.
Spring Auction ($)
The Spring Auction is one of the most important fundraising events of the year. It is also a fabulous adults-only evening for our parent and neighborhood community to enjoy great food, drink, and the chance to bid on and win some great items. The auction committee starts preparing in January. There are many ways to help. For more information, go to ps234auction.org.
Taste of Tribeca ($)
Not only does the Taste of Tribeca’s culinary festival bring together Tribeca’s best restaurants in one unforgettable, delicious experience, it also raises much-needed funds for PS 234’s and PS 150’s art and enrichment programs. There are many ways to volunteer to help at the Taste of Tribeca. For more information, go to tasteoftribeca.com.
